Many artists are exploring the art of chainsaw wood carving. The art is a natural extension of their skill set and often involves a combination of traditional carving techniques and modern designs. Crager and his wife, Tracie Dugas, have carved beautiful wood creations since the 1960s. They try to stay home as much as they can to do some staining or painting between shows. His daughters are now involved in his work as well, helping out on occasion with painting or staining. They prefer white pine because it is lighter than other types of pine and is less likely to crack.
Rich Anderson
Rich Anderson is a chainsaw woodcarver from Reedsport, Oregon. Anderson, a Poughkeepsie-native, lives with his family. Anderson has several degrees in fine arts. He teaches art to Pre-K through fifth graders. He has carved many sculptures around Long Island and has even created sculptures in Colorado. His pieces include standing trees as well as smaller pieces such corn ear sculptures. He is currently working to create a sign for Youngs Farm, Riverhead.
A $400 chainsaw allows him to create beautiful sculptures that would take days to chisel out of a tree. Chainsaw wood carving makes it a better choice than hammers, chisels, and hammers. They can also be recycled. Anderson is a word-of mouth marketer and has carved a large cobra and a great Blue Heron for Wading Water's mechanic.
Tracie Dugas
Tracie dugas's life-size wood carving of a wizard is an excellent example of her ability as a woodcarver using a chainsaw. The 49-yearold lives in Clare Nova Scotia between Digby, Yarmouth. The chainsaw wood carver was just one of many artists who displayed their work at the Canada Day weekend in Sydney. Although tourists flooded Sydney's waterfront, the dry spell allowed locals to take in the view of the chainsaw artist and enjoy the waterway.
Tim Crager
While Tim Crager didn't consider himself an artist and was only moderately talented with a chainsaw, his passion for carving turned into a full-time career six years ago. Crager sold more than $1million worth of carvings over the Eastern U.S. in his six-year career. Crager was born in Garrett in Eastern Kentucky and grew up following a chainsaw woodcarver at work. The artist's style captivated him, so one day he called his boss and put in his two-week notice.

When it comes to material choice, Crager prefers white pine because it's easily available from tree trimming companies. However, many people prefer other kinds of wood. Crager follows the grain of the wood and lets the saw guide his creations. Although Crager is usually clear about what he intends to do before he starts a project, he can change his mind at any time. A small project can be done in an hour, while a large one may take 33 to 35 hours.
Don Scoggins

The chainsaw sculptures are so large and detailed that they adorn the entrance and coffee shop at Blue Arrow Farm. Blue Arrow Farm's owner is Don Oriolo. He also manages Felix the Cat. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo’s husband, met while participating in a New Jersey State Fair competition for chainsaws.
The award-winning wood carver began carving at a competition in Reedsport, Oregon, 15 years ago. He was already proficient at hand carving, but he hadn't ever used a machine like a chainsaw. FAQ
What woods can be used to make furniture?
Woods can be classified according to how hard they are. Softwoods can be pine, fir or cedar. They're often used for outdoor furniture because they don't rot easily. These hardwoods include maple, mahogany and teak. Because they can't weather outside, they're usually used indoors.
How long does it take to finish a piece of furniture?
It depends on which wood you choose, how complicated your design is and what amount of finishing you apply. Hardwoods require more care than softwoods. Hardwoods also tend to be more expensive than softwoods. But they last longer and resist moisture better. It takes between one and three months to finish a piece.
How can I learn basic skills in woodworking?
You can start building furniture by making a bench. This project can easily be done using whatever wood you have at your house. You don't need to know which type of wood you should use. Instead, get some pine boards at Lowes or Home Depot. You'll need to sand the bench after it's built. Then, finish it with varnish or a stain.
Where can I purchase woodworking supplies
There are many places you can get everything you need, and you don't have to go far. You can visit your local hardware stores, or you can look online at sites like Amazon.com.
For furniture and other materials that you can reuse, check out flea markets and garage sales.
What is the difference between a hobbyist or a professional woodworker, and how can you tell?
Hobbyists are passionate about making things from wood, while professionals tend to be more focused on the quality and craftsmanship of their work. Hobbyists often take pride in the creations they make and often share them to family and friends. Professionals will spend hours looking at designs before they start to build a project. They'll be meticulous about every aspect of their work, from choosing the best materials to finishing it perfectly.
What is the minimum amount I will need to start?
There are no exact numbers because every project is different. Here are some factors to help you estimate how much money you will need.
-
Cost of materials
-
Tools and equipment
-
Time spent on the Project
-
Your hourly rate
-
How much profit can you anticipate to make
-
Hire help
Start small, if possible. You can make simple boxes or picture frames if you're just getting started. As you gain experience, more difficult projects will become possible.

How To
How to make wood joints
This tutorial will demonstrate how to join two pieces together of wood. We'll use the "pocket hole joint," which means we drill holes in the wood and then glue them together. If your wood has a straight grain, smooth surface, you can use this method. You may want to consider other methods, such as dowel joining. Here are the steps
-
Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Measure and mark the location where you would like to place the pocket hole joint. With a handheld drill machine or jig saw, drill 3/4-inch deep holes in the ends of each piece.
-
Sand Smooth. Sanding the edges of the wood will help to prevent the joint from splitting later.
-
Glue the two sides of the wood together. Apply glue to both the ends of the wood. Let the wood sit for 5 minutes, then clamp it together.
-
Secure the pieces together. After the glue has dried thoroughly, secure the pieces so that they are flush.
-
Trim Joinery. Trim the excess wood around the joint after the glue has dried completely.
To be able to turn the pieces inside-out, leave enough room between them.
